Cronin - written by a GP, the citadel is a novel about a young doctor who treats his patients in a Welsh mining village. He is shocked by the old-fashioned and inadequate medical care in a poor area. (this book inspired the creation of the NHS) 2) Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich - millions of Americans work full-time for poverty level wages. The author joins them and describes inadequate lodgings and exhausting jobs. 3) John Pilger - Freedom next time - acclaimed journalist John Pilger describes courageous people battling to free themselves, often glimpse freedom and have it taken away from them. 4) John Kenneth Galbraith - the Culture of Contentment - the New Deal economist explains how the contented resist social change 5) Franz Werfel - the song of Bernadette - Franz Werfel is the husband of Alma Mahler Werfel who published this book. The couple were escaping the Nazi persecution by crossing the French border in the Pyrennees. In telling the Lourdes story as a documentary, Werfel describes the life of a young girl. 6) Franz Kafka - Wedding Preparation in the country. - Prague born, Franz Kafka wrote a series of short absurd stories published in his lifetime. - The Judgement and A Report from the Academy are two classics, and Before the Law is a masterpiece of concision. 7) Vaclav Havel - The Memorandum - A play by the Czechoslovak author who became president of the Czech republic. The absurdist story tells us how authorities introduces an incomprehensible offficial language to make admin less ambiguous. 8) Martha Gellhorn - A Stricken Field , dedicated to her then husband Ernest Hemingway, this is a fictional tale of a journalist who is looking for her friend in Nazi-occupied Prague. 9) Milena Jezenska - Alles ist Leben. Franz Kafkas friend writes about life in Prague in the 1930s. 10) Max Brod - Franci. a romantic novel about a clerk who falls ill and is nursed by a young woman. Despite his gratefulness and love, he is ashamed to introduce her to his family. 11) Daphne du Maurier - Rebecca - romantic drama set on the French riviera and Cornwall, a young woman marries a charming older man but feels inadequate in his manor house. 12) Naomi Klein - The Shock Doctrine - a reportage about the methods used to control a political crisis.
