Well, a heat wave. Perfect time to go swimming in the lake.. Whats this email from the lake association.. Nnnoooo!! Avoid Contact with Attitash Water - Cyanobacteria Above Limit Lake Attitash Community Member: The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is recommending residents avoid contact with Lake Attitash water because a bloom of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, has been detected. The advisory will remain in place until two consecutive test samples show levels below the recommended threshold. Sampling at the state boat ramp in Merrimac on July 15 showed the cyanobacteria level at 100,000 cells/ml, which exceeds the state guideline of 70,000 cells/ml. Additional testing will be conducted next week. The earliest the advisory can be lifted is approximately July 31, but only if upcoming tests show levels to be below the state guideline. The state advisory says the cyanobacteria ("blue-green algae") are capable of producing toxins that may be harmful to humans and pets if they come in contact with water containing large concentrations. Beachgoers and boaters are warned not to swallow or rinse off with water containing the algae blooms. More information on cyanobacteria is available through the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control at cdc.gov/hab/cyanobacteria/pdfs/facts.pdf .
