Well-acted and in my opinion, great film. The premise is that, preceded by millions of people receiving a simultaneous text stating simply Goodbye World, a coordinated virus broadly shuts down key power infrastructure, leading to mass panic and societal collapse. Meanwhile, a bunch of good-looking yuppies congregate on a self-sufficient home in the woods of north California, where their complicated relations with each other preoccupy them while the country collapses. Of course, they get hit by reality. The critics destroyed it because they felt the characters were too preoccupied with their personal lives/connected pasts to make it more of a disjointed soap opera than a post-apocalyptic film. I personally think they missed the rather blunt point of the film, literally said aloud near the end. If youre more a fan of Michael Bay than Linklater, avoid. This is a well-acted character piece with an unoriginal but chilling and somewhat plausible apocalypse scenario that is not even in the realm of science fiction. Interesting: Kid Cudi--whose songs Day n Night, Pursuit of Happiness, and Make Her Say were all over the place in 2009--plays a token role, which is also too bad as his character deserved to have been explored more, and not just because he was the one POC... A more professional review below, but if youre intrigued, its on Netflix. If you have an accout but cant find it, send me a private message.
