Well at last. (said Jean Bond) I have been working in this field for 40 years (including in teacher education at the University of Warwick, where I was considered to be a ‘bit weird’ and definitely ‘dangerous’. In this academic environment that was certainly true as I knew then that the way to empower young people was to focus on their emotional well-being , not on their academic prowess. In doing so would you believe their academic performance increased exponentially? My student teachers were very bright but many of them were badly emotionally scarred by their childhood experiences. This showed up in the classroom where challenging children could destroy their self-confidence in moments. Coming from a ‘good’ middle class home does not mean that students are emotionally healthy. Strong pressure to succeed and please their parents often lead to self-harm and anorexia even in this otherwise privileged group.
