Well done to our Freshers Footballers who scored a tremendous All-Ireland Division 1 league title success this afternoon. Michael Dwyer reports and he also caught up with team-captain Stephen Coen at the Clubhouse. Unfortunately the iPad cut his interview short but there is a 90 second clip for you to enjoy. The cameraman was Ben Cowman. U.C.D. 0-22 D.C.U. 1-9 Dynamic midfield pairing of Tipperary natives Colin ORiordan and Liam Casey guided U.C.D. to a splendid Freshers Football Division 1 league victory at the expense of D.C.U. on Thursday afternoon last. While ORiordan, who had just returned from America where he played with the All-Stars football selections, and Casey were industrious, this display was characterised by sheer grit and determination by the entire squad. From the offing, the Belfield students hunted in packs and picked off some sweet scores. Stephen Coen commanded the centre-back berth and Conor McCarthy, Seán Meade and Colm Basquel were outstanding up-front for U.C.D. Even when Patrick Dunican tried to get last Seán Mulooly his efforts were futile. The Ross Munnelly-managed home-side had some good performances in the form of Shane Carthy and Cian Mulligan and they should feature prominently in the business-end of the Independent.ie championship. While the first quarter was a fairly even tussle with Kevin Traynor and Shane Carthy matching the Tipp pair, U.C.D. blitzed the home-side between the 16th and 20th minutes with a string of five-points, which gave them a 0-9 0-3 lead on 20 minutes. While David Neary and Diarmuid Breathnach tried to cut their gap, U.C.D., under the tutelage of Stephen OShaughnessy, Damien Farrelly and Shane McEntee, were unyielding, and points from Stephen Coen and Colm Basquel contributed to their half-time lead of 0-12 to 0-6. Even though the tempo dropped in the third quarter, U.C.D.s prolific attackers kept the pressure up on the cusp of the final quarter. Monaghan poacher Conor McCarthy was particularly instrumental in his sides 46th minute advantage of 0-18 to 0-8. D.C.U.s Aaron Byrne capitalised his opponents defence during one of their weaker moments with ten minutes remaining but a closing tally of four-points ensured that Mayo county star Stephen Coen accepted the trophy from Gerry Tully of Comhairle Ardoideachas after full-time.
