Well, due to an incredibly busy 5 months of programs, I have been extremely delinquent in posting on Facebook. So, over the next couple of nights I plan on playing some catch-up with a number of things I should have posted long ago. In early Spring of this year, Donna and two of our grandchildren, Wyatt and Lauren went for a hike along a creek that feeds into the Chattahoochee River. We stopped at one point where there were very large rocks that allowed for nimble children, like Wyatt to leap from rock to rock and cross the creek. They were long jumps so Wyatt had to take his time to insure his feed were positioned properly before each jump and he had to use both hands to grab the rock when he landed. After four jumps he was on the other side but upon landing he screamed SNAKE and in a flash he was back on the other side of the creek with Donna.....he was trembling! I quickly went to the spot and there was a nice midland water snake slipping under the very large rock. I peaked underneath and I could just barely see the snake. I reach the entire length of my arm under the rock and could just barely grab the snake at mid body....so I gently extracted the snake. Typical of watersnakes, the snake bit me and musked down my shirt. I then made my way over to Wyatt, who was still shaking and showed him the snake. We took a few photos then I released the snake back under his rock where I had collected him. He is a really pretty orange phase midland water snake and unfortunate for these snakes, many people that find then think they are copperheads so they are often killed.
