She won’t admit it herself, preferring think she holds the reins in her world, but I am here to tell you that isn’t so. If my face isn’t well-kent to ye, I’m Devorgilla of Doon, the most powerful cailleach in all the broad Heilands, and across the fine Scottish isles. Aye, there be others who make the same claim. But I’m here now, so dinnae ye dare say otherwise. Where Sue-Ellen is, I’m in charge. Always have been, always will be. She knows I’m good, too. That’s why she never fusses when I walk into a scene. ‘Course, as well as she knows me, she wouldn’t dare refuse me. Terrible things happen to those who vex me. Some even vanish, never to be seen again! Lest you look deep into the eyes of a toad, newt, or other unsavory creature. Then you might recognize someone who annoyed me.
