Well if penmanship isnt taught by the homeroom teacher, then how about if its taught by the art teacher since the strokes in cursive writing are so artistic? Oh, there are no art teachers any more? Well, if there are no more art classes, maybe the kids could be given sticks and they could practice by drawing letters in the sand on the playground. Oh, theres no more recess? Well, if the kids no longer go outside, then maybe it could be taught for improving hand and eye coordination during physical education classes. Oh, theres no more gym class any more? Well, then maybe kids could learn penmanship by studying the Declaration of Independence and other handwritten historical documents. Oh, there are no more American History classes at your school any more? Some say that would show prejudice against all the other nations and cultures of the world through favoritism. Well, unfortunately, it looks like our legislators might have the best idea after all…just concentrate on teaching students to pass state assessments and meet federal guidelines. Besides, being able to sign your own name is so old school! X marks the spot anyway.
