Well, if you were one of those who believed the whole value of charters issue was nothing more than a ploy to force an election, pat yourself on the back. You were right. The first real clue came Thursday when the bill was tabled, and we discovered a clause that had never been discussed or leaked by the PQ - the primacy of the French language. The same clause that didnt fly when Bill 14 was defeated, found a new home in this bill, even though its a language clause and has nothing to do with values. Then this from Pauline Marois in a speech to the PQ caucus this weekend. We do not want to be the government of a province, we want to be the government of a country, free and independent, Quebec she said. And, the first stage in “building a free Quebec,” is affirming Quebec’s identity (i.e. the charter). Then, as if to prove she is either in the worst case of denial since Rob Ford, or is in fact living on another planet, she added, The economy is doing well. It is the Liberals , who denigrate Quebec’s economy and sow uncertainty. They are hurting Quebec families.” Never mind that the Liberals are not in power, theyre the ones hurting Quebec. Hey, youve gotta give her style points. Staring the cold hard facts in the face that your government has been an abject economic failure, and then managing, with a straight face to blame that on someone else - priceless. But wait, theres more. She went on to say that Quebec values have “a very Quebec colour.” Yes, she really said that. And then, she pulled this gem out of her pocket. I do not have not have much hope the Liberals will contribute to the values debate, because they are radically soft”, (whatever that means). And then, she traveled back in time 35 years, to remind the party faithful that it was the Liberals who voted against Bill 101, the Charter of the French language back in 1977. Of course, what she conveniently failed to mention, was that it was Robert Bourassa, then the leader of that same Liberal party, who invoked the notwithstanding clause upholding Bill 101, against the decision of Canadas Supreme Court. Finally, after painting a glowing picture of the first year of her government, Marois said, “Quebec is already stronger. Imagine now what we can do when we have a majority.” So, finally, there it is, the admission that this charter debate is nothing more than smokescreen designed to get the PQ a majority, and force another referendum. At least now we know what the real plan has been since day one. As to Marois reference of Quebec being stronger, it would be laughable if it wasnt so pathetic. The only thing stronger in Quebec, is the stench from the garbage piling up outside the homes of those packing up to leave this province. That and the rotting carcass of the broken promises made to the once proud people who were born here, or came here for a better life. They were willing to work hard, contribute to this provinces growth and pride, and embrace their fellow citizens, no matter where they came from or what their religion. Its that dream that is now dying a slow and painful death.
