Well, if youre looking for the doughnut creation story, keep looking. As far as we can tell, there is the doughnut as known in North America and fried dough that resembles doughnuts in the rest of the world. Although the doughnut as weve discussed it so far is presented as of US origin, its really, really hard to forget about the French Beignet, the Greek loukoumas, the Polish (oh my god to die for!) pączki (the ultimate jelly doughnut! Been around since the Middle Ages, so we find it hard to credit a North American origination story....) HOWEVER, you can either believe: 1. The Dutch with their strict adherence to sweet, confectionery products, developed it and called it oil cake. Dont buy that one... 2. Hanson Gregory claims to have devised the ring doughnot on board a ship in 1847. Seems he couldnt get the middle bit of his doughnuts to cook up, so he punched the middle out and the ring doughnut was born. Meh. 3. An 1803 UK cookbook mentions the doughnut as an American food. Maybe under that NAME; but weve already seen three instances where the doughnut - under other names - in some cases pre-existed European settlement on this continent....
