Well, it happened. After shedding a few tears and saying a final farewell to open water the anticipation quickly built for the approaching hard water season. Of course, this excitement can lead to some anglers to venture into very dangerous situations, which is why as tough as it may be we patiently waited while old man winter began to tighten his grasp around the region. After 2 weeks of temps in the teens, we cautiously proceeded onto the frozen backwaters of the mighty Mississippi for the first time yesterday. Carefully checking the ice every step of the way we were pleasantly surprised to find a very solid 3 inches of ice in most areas. We had our hands full between manning the vexilars and jig rods for panfish and chasing flags as the tip ups flew. The Clam Outdoors drop jig tipped with plastics or a wax worm seemed to be the ticket as we watched the screens light up like Christmas trees with the red, green, and yellow marks of suspended panfish lying deep in the basin of the backwaters. A few jigs with the tungsten treat and we watched fish soar up from the depths to eat it. Three guys, two spots, and some worn out rods later, we called early ice a success and packed it up with plans to do it all again tomorrow. Remember, be safe out there, don’t travel on perilous ice alone, always carry safety picks, and be smart. No fish is worth dying for. Have a great weekend and good luck on the water. Maybe I’ll see you out there! Tyler Mohr Fishing
