Well it has been a while since my last slip, trip and frantic - TopicsExpress

Well it has been a while since my last slip, trip and frantic slide down memory lane, so heres another fond one of mine... Im sure most of us had pets when we were little. At least one dog or cat for sure. But how about all those other great pets? That hamster, gold fish, parakeet, painted turtle, gerbil or guinea pig that came from the pet department at Woolworths? That little dibbie baby chick for Easter that was dyed pastel blue, pink or green... and oh Lord dont forget that crusty little painted hermit crab that made the trip from the Gay Dolphin all the way back to Spartanburg in his own tiny little gift box. We had all those and a lot more at our house. I think at one time or another my brother and I kept every thing that crawled, hopped or slithered. We had a creek that ran behind the house and wed catch crawfish and salamanders and put them in my dads aquarium, until that time we caught a really big salamander about 4 inches long and put it in there. That thing ate two of my dads favorite male guppies before we could get it out of there and I had to replace those guppies with a months worth of allowance. Once we even managed to catch a small striped garter snake that dad let us keep in an empty 5 gallon fish tank (over moms vehement objections). We covered the tank with scrap window screen and duct tape. Then one day when I got home from school I found mom sitting out on the front porch. She said that she had been sitting out there for 3 hours because that snake had got loose in the house and she wasnt going back inside until we caught it and either killed it or put it back where we found it. I guess we didnt do such a good job with the duct tape because that snake was surely gone and hiding somewhere in the house. Mom said she was going to her moms house down the street and wouldnt be back until we found it. Me and my brother looked in every nook and cranny in the house. My dad even helped look when he got home from work. Midnight came and went with no snake, so we went to bed while mom stayed true to her word and spent the night at grannys house. The next morning my dad, me and my brother all agreed that we would white lie and say that we found it and turned it loose outside. We all got that piercing, side-eyed stare down from mom, like... yall better not be lying. Thankfully that snake never turned up or started stinking so we are pretty sure he made it back out of the house on his own (somehow), but a good while later after her nerves had calmed down we all fessed up and convinced her that snake was long gone by then. What was so funny is that from then until the day she finally moved out of the house many years later she always opened those closet doors real slow and peeked before going in. RIP mom... you surely deserved it. :)
