Well it has come and gone but another great racing weekend with friends and family was had at Mid Ohio. With just a few days left before the event I decided to attend my first ever event at Mid Ohio. I knew that my best friends Michael and Tracy Leveque where going to be there so I figured it was worth the trip jsut to hang out with them. Left Virginia Friday evening 6pm and arrived at Mid Ohio 1:30AM got the car unloaded and Hotel Clemens setup for the night. Got up early and got through registration and tech with no problems. Saturday Morning First session out I tried to follow Michael but he just walked away and left me. I found Mid Ohio to be an extremely hard track to learn proper lines on. My car is setup more for longer wider sweeping turn like at my home track VIR. After the qualifying session Michael ran a 1:46:047 and I was sitting at a 1:48:421. Saturday Race I was lined up just behind Michael and I told him I would push him to the lead in turn one... When we got the green he dove to the left and I tucked in just behind him as close as possible without contact.. A car in front of him pulled over to block Michael and he had to let up to keep from running him over that ended up with me hitting Micheal and giving him an huge push into turn one. Michael took the lead in turn one and started leading us around track. Somehow after all the pushing at the start I came out like 5 or 6 in line. As the race progessed Michael lost the lead and dropped back a couple of spots while I was learning the track and pushing harder I was getting much faster. I passed several cars and got to the point where I could see Michael as I approached him coming into the final turns before the flag stand, I had a good run and it caught Michaels attention as he checked his mirror, after he saw who it was he almost missed the hard left turn and ended up almost spinning directly in front of me. I whaled on the brakes and let Michael get straightened out and to save Corvair to Corvair contact and then proceeded to making another charge at him. At the end of the back straight he let me by and I set off to finish just ahead of him. Sunday morning practice qualifying race I lined up third and got a good start when we all got through the first couple of turns and seperated a bit I was still third. Halfway throught the first lap the second place car pulled over and let me go past him. On the next lap I saw him off track and broken. that meant I was in second now. I was approaching the keyhole turn and the yellow was out. Two SRFs had heavy contact with each other as I got to the next marshall stand I saw the double yellow. While driving around under the double yellow behind the pace car I saw that Michael was off track. Turns out he had a ignition pick up coil go bad. As we came back around I noticed that the GTL car that was leading the group was sitting on pit lane ,,, that means that I was in first now. We ran a few more laps under yellow and with the pace car before the time expired and the race was over. Sunday Race The starting positions where set by how you finished the race in the morning. Corvair at the front of the field... I got a good start and stayed out front for several laps until the GTL car got to me he passed me when I got into traffic passing the SRFs once he got around me I knew he had like 100s of hours at this track so I went to school and followed him watching and learning. I started to gain ground on him and would of been on him bumper if we had had one or two more laps. During the race I never saw Michael, he had a rotor button come apart and end his race before it got started. I saw him sitting in the infield during the cool down lap. End results for me got two wins in SPU class, Won the Weekend Championship for SPU, started on the pole for one race and finished second overall (Excluding SRF) Started the weekend runing 1:48.421 ended up running fairly consistant 1:43. with my best lap being a 1:43.213. with an average lap speed of 83.71mph My car ran great all weekend and company was great wish We could do this every weekend... As soon as I get caught up on sleep and work I will get some video edited and posted.. David Clemens
