Well, its been a particularly sombre week for refugees and refugee advocates this week. We dont feel the official conversation about asylum seekers has been this negative (indeed, this silenced) for a long time. Since the information about Sri Lankan/Tamil refugees in Australian waters was leaked to Australian media, there has been a lot of TV reports, newpaper articles and various soundbytes from politicians, lawyers and media personalities. We are glad that information, however minor it might be, is beginning to circulate. Indeed, this sharing of information is largely responsible for the High Courts injunction today re: the return of asylum seekers to Sri Lanka. However, the nature of this sharing tends to take a particular shape, and often does not allow for the complexity of the struggle to be conveyed or discussed.
