Well, its been a rough couple of days for little Jonah. He just couldnt keep up the breathing by himself, despite working as hard as he can. The chest xray this morning showed his lungs to be still very stiff. They decided to give him another dose of surfactant and take the cpap off and go to a ventilator (which is a step backwards). The ventilator is keeping his lungs full and stretched and giving that surfactant a chance to spread and cover evenly. They also sedated him so he would rest and not fight the ventilator. He has looked much more comfortable. There is one main risk involved in fairly aggressive ventilation and that is that a lung could blow out or get a hole in it and then collapse, so we need prayer that it will soften and loosen his lungs without damaging them. We are disappointed to see him struggling, but grateful that he is getting what he needs. His bilirubin level also was up already today, so he has been under phototherapy for that as well, but thats no biggie. Please pray his little lungs would get ready to work over the next day or two and that soon after that he would be stable enough for us to start holding him.
