Well it’s been 3 days now since the Adelaide Bush Fires Support Group 2015 Facebook page was launched and already over 300 local Adelaide members and still growing. Special thanks to Natasha Woods our Admin person who is constantly monitoring the posts on the site and sharing official CFS news as this situation continues. And as far as post’s go you are welcome to share anything that is related to the group, we want to hear your Ideas, feelings and thoughts on how we can all work together and give ongoing support to those in need. Having said that we have had to remove 2 post earlier this morning because of their bad taste and offensive nature. And it will be our duty of care to monitor post to make sure people don’t suffer any future pain because some morons unfeeling attitude. Any way I have been inundated with questions by email and pm’s since we started this page and interviews on 5AA have bought us many inquiries as well, so ill answer two of the most common and important. 1 - How do I get involved in volunteering? Well the answer is simple and one that only you can answer, so ask yourself what I am good at, what are my strengths and am I passionate about the cause. Once you have done this and have a fair idea of what you could do please check out the links below. Volunteering SA - volunteeringsa.org.au/ St. Vincent De Paul - https://vinnies.org.au/page/Get_Involved/Become_a_volunteer/ The Salvation Army - salvationarmy.org.au/get-involved/Volunteer/ The Australian Red Cross - redcross.org.au/volunteering.aspx All fantastic organisations and worth a look at, but Volunteering SA is a good place to start. 2 - Where should I donate money? Well the answer here is a REGISTERD CHARITY. Do not fall for door knocking scams or people on the sidewalk with unmarked collection tins. Always ask for ID so you know your cash is going to where you intend it to go. As far as where to donate once again it is a matter of personal preference, there are many great organisations out there. Find one you are comfortable with. My endorsements (if that means anything to you) would be the two below. The South Australian bushfire recovery fund, this is a government run initiative with lots of information on this link - https://sa.gov.au/topics/emergencies-and-safety/south-australian-bushfire-recovery#title4 The Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery, the red cross have a long history of this kind of work both here at home and internationally - redcross.org.au/disaster-relief-and-recovery.aspx ---------- OUR NEWS ------------ The Adelaide Bush Fires Support Group. We have been working at a fevered pace behind the scenes for the last few days, what had started out as a simple counselling service in the last 72 hours has taken on a life of its own. I have spent literally hours on the phone this weekend talking to colleges and fellow therapist in the counselling field and also now see the need for social workers and other human services workers to be involved. Having said that I have to say I am overwhelmed and feeling honoured by the cooperation we are receiving from so many different sources and organisations, and was blown away when a 5AA announcer described this as “an extremely well thought out and needed initiate” As the impacts of this natural disaster become prevalent in people’s lives over the next 3 months to even the next 3 years. It is my guarantee that we will be here to support you even if it ends up as only me and my keyboard. Thanks for reading Take care of yourself and everyone around you. Cheers Andrew Beattie
