Well my first grocery shopping trip is behind me since VAT on food - TopicsExpress

Well my first grocery shopping trip is behind me since VAT on food was raised on the first of this month. I bought a few items and raised an eyebrow when I got through the checkout and the pimply adolescent announced that my purchases had come to nearly ISK 9,000. I knew tax was going up, but this kinda knocks it out of the park, I thought to myself. On closer inspection of the receipt I saw that the kid at the register had, instead of cauliflower, punched in cherries in the same weight. This accounted for around ISK 3,000. I promptly pointed out his mistake, at which he sullenly went and got the manager, who handed me back the difference in cash with the remark, We dont even sell cherries. (WHY it was coded into the register, then, is anybodys guess.) I asked him whether it wasnt customary in instances like this to, say, apologize to the customer, to which he responded, with a hint of irony: Yes, it is. I *sincerely* apologize. Icelandic customer service at its finest. The more things change, the more they stay the same, etc. as this post from a few years ago aptly demonstrates.
