Well, my late Dad was a High School Band Director... after his time as a gifted tenor banjo player with the Major Bowes Troupes in the late 30s. He knew and taught all the instruments for band... AND he composed swing marches for concert and marching band that were published by the big band music publishers of the day, Boosey and Hawkes, Carl Fischer, Neil Kjos, and Fillmore. One of his marches, Time Out For A Jam Session was recorded in the 1950s by The Band of the Welsh Guards in England.... (this band is referred to as The Queens Own, much as the U.S. Marine Band is called The Presidents Own over here. Another march he composed (were talking full concert band scores here...) was Stepping High - a personal favorite of mine... which was recorded by The Royal Artillery Band in England on a 50s LP, The Band Plays. So, it was kind of fun to find a YouTube video of one of his Swing Marches, Drum Majors Special! Not the best reproduction of the band, but the Bell Lyra player is having a great time with the melody, as the Bells rehearse their parts, while the music is played in the background. I have no idea who the recording of the musical score was done by, perhaps the band of the college there... since the only recorded version I have is from an old 3 reel tape recorded by Dads old friend and musical associate of many years, the late Prof. Maynard J. Wettlaufer at Fredonia State Collge in New York, and that was a private tape that he sent to Dad to hear their home recording of it. Heres Drum Majors Special, by James E. Skip Handlon... recorded somewhere in South America! https://youtube/watch?v=TOKkI8lmMak
