Well, my performance in the local art show was dismal at best. - TopicsExpress

Well, my performance in the local art show was dismal at best. There were 8 pictures entered in my category - graphics (graphite, charcoal, colored pencils and watercolor). That is right - 8 pictures of which two were mine. Mathematically speaking, I had 25% of the total items that could win 1st, 2nd or 3rd place or receive an honorable mention, an atta boy, way to go, Remember, it is not about whether you win or lose, but how you play the game, etc. Side note - that last statement is one of the worst statements ever made. Why? Cause that is all it is about - wining. Life is no game. Either you win or you lose, period. Losers die or get the piss beat out of them, or get to stand next to the individual with his/her arm raised, miss out on the prizes, dont get the job, dont get the girl, etc., etc., etc. Losers get nothing. Sure, there is a right way to lose but at the end of the day, a loser is empty handed. No one and I mean no one, starts out doing anything competitive with the mindset Sure losing is cool, I dont mind losing”. EVERYONE starts out with one goal - winning! That’s what I intended to do. I entered the first two pictures below – Bar Rafaeli & the Thoroughbred racehorse. Did I get first – nope. Probably second – negative. OK – I had to get third, right – NO with a capital N and a capital O. Not even a mention. The picture that won first place was one of those Andy Warhol types with about 90 things in it like an owl, a clock, a book, etc., on a table. If there was a theme, no one out of about 75 people figured it out. Second place was a 6” x 6” colored pencil drawing of a black and white cat. You got that, right – colored pencil was the medium and the cat was black and white. It had a tint of pink on the nose and that was it. The third place winner was a 10” x 8” moose in watercolor. The moose was brown and browner and the scene was late fall so a bunch of blobs of orange, red, burnt sienna, brown, etc. No leaves were drawn – just blobs of colors because the background was supposed to be blurry. When I lose, I get pissed and I get an attitude that comes over me that I will never, ever lose again. With this contest,I may even go as far as seeking the winners out so I can enter the next contest they enter in order to take aim and smoke them. The judge was over the art department at Valdosta State. Out of the eight pictures in my category, three were colored and 5 were charcoal, pen and ink or graphite. Clearly, this man was biased toward color. In addition, art contests are very subjective because beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that helps with the sting of losing but not much. Check out the picture of Ms. Rafaeli. She was pissed. She was going off about me entering a drawing of her in a contest and losing. I had to hide out for a couple of days. I guess I have blown it with her. Anyway – on to bigger and better things. Most of my drawings are on hold because I am drawing several scenes with deer for Timmy Davis. He knows many people in the hunting and fishing categories and is going to try to help me get some business in that area, if possible. There is quite a business for artists, especially wildlife artists, for drawing hunters and anglers with their quarry. I have included the three drawings I am doing for him. Also included an update of the “Born and Raised “drawing And that is it for the Joel Smith Facebook blog today. WHAT? Did he just say BLOG. Facebook is not for blogging…!!! Ah…mine is. Later.
