Well, on a completely impulsive urge, I went to see Guardians - TopicsExpress

Well, on a completely impulsive urge, I went to see Guardians again yesterday afternoon. Mainly to see it in the new Prime theater at the AMC 16, and check out the new seating and their Atmos sound system. I specifically avoided this on the weekend because theyre only showing it in 3D there and the movie itself is a fake 3D, but curiosity got the better of me. Those seats are nice. Those seats you see sitting outside the theater is the same as the ones you get inside. And you get a lot of leg room since these are recliners. Each row is separated by a small wall with a glass rail. Its a really nice theater and very roomy. Its assigned seating too, so you can pick your seats days in advance and not have to show up an hour or more ahead of time and wait in line in order to get good seats. When we saw the 2D screening, we got in line at 8:30 for a 10pm show, and there was already a line; we barely got some good seats. The sound is amazing. Im not sure, but I think theyve tweaked the seats to react to the bass, because you can really feel it without it actually being very loud. Sound was very clear, and came from all directions. When the credits rolled, the theater lit up all the speakers with red LED light. The screen is big, and I believe its the same one thats been there for a few years now. That specific theater was originally set up as an IMAX, and then switched to ETX a few years ago. We saw The Hobbit there, at 48fps, and that was actually the last thing I saw in that theater until yesterday. Anyway, all Monday morning, I was thinking about going to see that movie again and I got online and picked a seat. I headed just after 1pm and arrived around 1:25 for the 1:30 showing. I found the assigned seat, and I was all alone in that row. I dropped off some stuff and got a drink. When I came back, there was someone in the seat next to mine. As I was just about to sit down, he looked up and said Dave?. Turned out he was a guy I worked with at UFO for a couple years, and I havent seen for over a decade. Anyway, back to the movie. Like I said, audio was amazing, image was big and clean, seats were comfy and roomy. The fake 3D was, well, all over the place. There were some good shots and some really bad ones. Fake 3D and Groot apparently hate each other. The 3D effect on Rocket made him look like his face was projected on a sphere half the time. Most other faces were flat. There were a lot of rippling artifacts along edges where the background was revealed from behind foreground objects. Reflections looked like they were painted on surfaces, which made windows look really weird. Generally, all the typical fake 3D crap Ive come to expect, though I didnt catch any depth drifting like there was in The Green Lantern. Im really considering getting a pair of De3D glasses. Theyre like 3D glasses, but both lenses use the same polarization, so both eyes see the same view, effectively cancelling the 3D effect. Still, I do want to see this again in that theater. And Im really looking forward to The Battle Of The Five Armies in December.
