Well opions seem to be divided regarding Al Sharptons calling for - TopicsExpress

Well opions seem to be divided regarding Al Sharptons calling for an emergency meeting regarding the black out of this years oscar nominations. Not a single African American was nominated in any of the categorys while Selma was nominated for best picture. Sharpton says its ironic they would nominate a picture depicting the fight for racial equality while exhibiting apparent discrimination in the nominees that were selected. But there are others who say Sharpton ought to focus his attention elsewhere instead of the nominees which werent selected. However, there appears to be reason to focus on the oscars and that need doesnt negate the need to fight elsewhere. It appears to be a matter of choosing ones fight and Sharpton has chosen the oscars. As for the other fights that exist theres yet room at the cross for any and everyone whod like to join it! 93 percent of those voting for the nominees are white and 76 percent are male. In the entire history of the oscars, only one African American female ever won for best actress - Halle Berry! For the African American male there were 4, yet only 1 for best director T.J. Martin. In considering the vast amounts of African American, including Hispanic talent within the industry itself blatant is the exclusion being exhibited here. It appears that when in fact African Americans are acknowledged for their talents displayed it is while portraying that of a slave or some other character under submission and control of white authority. So even when talents are acknowledged the talent appears to be acting as the slave the country brought you here to be. And even when occupying places of achievement it serves only to convey no racism further exists. For example, last years best picture was 12 years a slave and the award for best supporting actress went to Lupita Nyongo - a slave within the movie! And not just any slave either but one who was repeatedly raped and savagely beaten until the skin flicked off her back by the lash of the whip. Those were the nominees in last years Oscars who obtained the award. And this was done while the President of the Academy Awards was an African American woman! So we see black faces in high places does not change the equation. It serves only to further the illusion of inclusion. And if Al Sharpton wants to fight against this good for him. Id rather support an attempt to fight than people running their mouths who dont fight anything, except the need to get out there and join it! Theres room at the cross for those who wish to bare the burden in a demand for the justice that is needed. What we need are those willing to sling a fist at the injustice - not those who are fighting against it!
