Well, six of the thirteen European teams got through to the round of sixteen. Didn’t even bat 500 … that’s 462. Eight of the ten teams from the Americas got through to the round of sixteen. Batting 800. Africa’s maximum possible, if Algeria goes through in Group H is two out of five … which would be batting 400, almost as good as Europe. Asia has almost no hope … best result is one out of five if Russia or South Korea go through instead of Algeria … Yes, I’m counting Russia twice … in the European and Asian calculations. I also find it interesting that so many of the teams that are through are continguous: Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Germany in Europe; Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Colombia in South America … I s’pose we can add Mexico and the United States now too … all the other teams’ countries don’t border any of the other countries whose teams are through …
