Well, spring training is about to start. Baseball will be here - TopicsExpress

Well, spring training is about to start. Baseball will be here soon. With that...also comes the annual ritual of breaking in a new glove. Maybe you bought a new glove for your upcoming softball season. Maybe you gave one of your kids a new glove for Christmas....but its gonna start getting used soon. A conversation I recently had made me think of something I wanted to post. And that is: DONT OIL YOUR GLOVE! And really....dont do ANYTHING you read or hear from other people as far as how to break in your new glove...except use it. They sell all manner of break in creams and oils. There are also endless home remedies for breaking in a glove...including but not limited to: soaking it in a bucket of warm water, baking it in the oven, running it over with the car, putting it under your mattress, beating it with a mallet, soaking it in neatsfoot oil. Its all horseshit. Yes, even that old way your dad told you to do...thats horseshit too. These ridiculous things will soften your glove in the short term...but theyll facilitate a quicker deterioration of the leather and in some of the more modern gloves with special padding, adjustment straps, moisture wicking material...it will ruin those components of your new glove. You (or your kid) are not playing in the majors. Youre not facing a 162 game season. Just break in your glove by using it.
