Well that was a pretty intense weekend with The Taniwha half - TopicsExpress

Well that was a pretty intense weekend with The Taniwha half marathon on Saturday then a 650km motorbike trip around the Waikato and Coromandel on Sunday. Our part of The Taniwha started from Mangakino and followed a section of the Waikato River Trail for the required 21km but it was also run in conjunction with a variety of other distances (from 84km down to 10km I think) and disciplines so we had the interesting experience of sharing the narrow, undulating track with mountainbikers, runners and walkers. That went well with everybody appearing to be polite and considerate of others. Our team consisted of Jocelyn Flanagan, Jill Cunninghame, Fleur Austin, Carol Friend and Anita along with her hubby Nigel who helped out with logistics for this all star cast. And me. No photos this time but the course was a good one with a far better surface than our previous Taupo half so Im not hearing too many complaints of sore joints etc. Lovely day and good organisation even included a beer at the end which is a pretty good way of slaking the inevitable thirst. Sundays ride was intended as a warmup for the annual Dentists Ride scheduled for two weekends hence but I suspect that the main event might actually be a rather more modest affair than yesterdays. John Maynard and myself headed up to Tauranga to hook up with Dr Bob from whence we took some pretty obscure and twisty back roads up to Te Aroha for morning smoko, thence via Paeroa to Thames and on to Coromandel town for lunch, then to Whangamata for afternoon smoko and eventually back home late. That would really be one of the great rides if it werent for the inevitable heavy traffic around the Coromandel. The roads are nirvana for a motorbike with mile after mile of tight twisties and constant elevation changes, all with the spectacular backdrop of the Firth of Thames, it doesnt get much better. Weather was great apart from a bit of fog over the Kaimais. Lifes good.
