Well, the boys of summer have returned and brought with them - TopicsExpress

Well, the boys of summer have returned and brought with them sunshine and warmer weather. Questions about the team abound. Can Billy Hamilton deliver? Will our team get and then stay healthy? Will the left side of the infield produce offensively? Will Ludwick stay healthy and produce as he did two years ago? Can Bryan Price get this team over the hump? Today, however, is not the day for these questions. This day is for celebration and unbridled optimism. Along the parade route and inside the ballpark today will be a gathering like that foretold by the great Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Black men and White men, Jew and Gentile, Protestant and Catholic, east side and west side, street car supporters and non street car supporters. We may not join hands, but we will sing in the words of the old baseball spiritual, Take Me Out to the Ballgame! A long season stretches out before us and holds the promise of a long and crazy ride that will carry both heartbreak and elation with streaks both good and bad, amazing plays, walk off wins, base clearing brawls, bad and now maybe over turned calls. We will be amazed at things weve never seen before. But we the faithful will ride and through it all, we will believe. You know, I must say that there are 3 days when I really miss my mom, mothers day, her birthday, and opening day. She loved her Reds and she loved Pete Rose. I dont think Im alone in that. Baseball, its sights, sounds, and smells often flood us with memories of the past and therein we find a huge part of its allure. I even find myself looking at an old Indians hat on my book shelf and missing my best friend, a die-hard Indians fan of all things. Let us all be proud today and stick our chests out a little farther. Let us celebrate our past and embrace the present. Let us stand with the Reds fans that came before us as the old left hander looks down from Heaven. Across the country people know that nobody, and I mean nobody does Opening Day like the beloved Cincinnati Reds. So, we got that going for us which is nice!
