Well the last and final day of #projectbluenovember is a number of things and some enlightening info. #facesoftyp1 is the majority of pictures below. They are all friends we have met through networking with JDRF and diabetes advocacy. You see point number 1 is that diabetes is not always inherited. Up until 2 weeks ago we knew NO ONE with diabetes. There is no family history and not even an acquaintance we knew with type 1. So if you think genetics is a sole cause of diabetes think again. Fortunate for us but unfortunate for him we finally know someone with Type 1. He was just diagnosed two weeks ago and was a long standing friend of our son Blake. It is amazing having someone that you really know with it but it is tragic to know that he to will be haunted by this disease until there is a cure. Our prayers to him and his family. The second point I would like to make about the faces below is that look at them how healthy and full of life. Another frustrating misconception is that these people overeat or eat unhealthy things. As you can see they are thin, usually athletic kids that did not consume to much sugar. The last point I want to make on the faces of type 1 pictures is look at the innocent smiles. Despite their hardships of up to 12 needle sticks a day and the grueling Type 1 schedule they must live, they still find time to smile and rejoice in their new found friendships. The last picture is just a summary of #whyweneedacurenow. Can you imagine any of these kids being blind or on dialysis or having an amputation. I know I cant. When Cameron Shephard was first diagnosed I cried and cried not that she had to get shots and count carbs but that she would have to face a future of these complications. And now today it bothers me even more because with extreme diligence I have discovered that you cant control the numbers and you cant avoid the complications. Cameron, in just three short years has received yet another new prescription for glasses. Some days she needs them to see but on other days her vision is fine thanks to these numbers. The last category for todays challenge is #facesoftype2. You will notice I dont have a picture for this one, simply because It could be any of us. I dont personally know a type 2 diabetic. I do know a lot of border line ones. The best thing about the nonexistent image is that you can try and change your lifestyle and hopefully avoid becoming a Type 2, a choice that was never given to our Type 1s.
