Well, they have their reasons, which are not wrong: Industrial livestock production is damaging to the environment, and requires a ridiculous amount of resources that could be used to feed humans. Were we, as individuals/families, eating what we were willing to hunt or catch and kill ourselves, as humans did only a few hundred years ago, wed be eating a lot less meat. But theres still more to this story. Low protein intake is associated with a major reduction in cancer in people under the age of 65 (see: cell/cell-metabolism/fulltext/S1550-4131(14)00062-X and washingtonpost/national/health-science/too-much-protein-could-lead-to-early-death-study-says/2014/03/04/0af0603e-a3b5-11e3-8466-d34c451760b9_story.html), and the majority of Americans consume twice as much protein as they need to be healthy (see: pcrm.org/health/diets/vsk/vegetarian-starter-kit-protein). That said, I doubt most Americans are going to change their patterns of consumption any time soon. And so it goes
