Well this afternoon was pretty darn OK. The dogs and I hit the river about noon. The first run I walked into is below Carlton. Got to cross the river and fish it from river right. About 3/4s of the way through the run, I had a soft, soft grab - no hook up - and I couldnt get the fish to come back. I finished out the run, headed to the Yukon, and ultimately another run. This next run is above Calton. It also swings best from river right and is a nice trough against the left bank that is fairly narrow in a wide shallow riffle. To fish the trough with a nice slow swing, you have to stand in about thigh deep water right in the middle of the run. The trough has boulders and structure; the rest of the run is small to medium sized river rock - easy wading. And OMG does that trough ever swing nice.. From the time I started until I hooked the fish, about 1/4 way through the run, I really felt fishy. Every pass I just anticipated a grab. Thats right I hooked and brought to hand a wild buck of about 7 pounds. The grab was awesome - very soft pick up and started taking line. Both fish were on my Kilowatt at the end of a type 3 sink tip. Figured I couldnt top the high, so I just secured the fly packed up my MKS and headed back across the river to my Yukon. SATISFACTION - you know what I mean.
