Well, this is a delightful Zeptember surprise! The band (or, more likely, their representative(s) just posted up the full-length alternate version of Black Dog. When I think of Black Dog, I think of the perfect opening to one of the greatest rock & roll albums of all time. I had recorded Stairway To Heaven on a cassette, but I hadnt heard the whole album until I got a cassette of Zep IV. If memory serves me correctly, I was in 7th/8th grade and Kevin Bailey proposed the idea that we go in halves on a BMG or Columbia House Record Club deal. In my memory, we both ordered a copy. I could also be completely wrong about that. Perhaps Kevin will chime in. Anyway, the song is so fresh.... Plant taking a vocal lead to announce a new type of blues has arrived, and then the attack of one of Jimmys greatest riffs. And, of course, the rhythm section is churning away. There was something different about this song that grabbed me in a way I couldnt really express. Years later, when I started learning more about music, I figured out it was the shifting time signatures and also the way the riff winds back into itself. And, of course, then theres Bonzo....
