Well, this is no blockbuster for Western Mass, far from it, - TopicsExpress

Well, this is no blockbuster for Western Mass, far from it, although it appears that eastern Hampden county did get into the heavy snow band, that is still pushing in off the coast. Im curious about snow totals down that way, so let me know. Storm showed signs of moving east last night. I didnt adjust snowfall totals down last night perhaps when I should have as some folks mentioned to me, as I was unsure if storm would retrograde and move in closer to us. But it stayed just too far east. Folks in central Mass have 2 feet of snow in places already. Had that band moved 50 miles to the west or so, we would have experienced the kind of snow we were expecting. Two lessons I learned from this storm, one of which is a lesson from last year, that will make me more skeptical and conservative going forward: Old lesson 1: when fresh, cold Arctic air moves in before a storm, it can act as a suppression mechanism to keep heavier snow to the south and east of Western Mass, and can actually dry out the precip shield, and New Lesson 2: Whenever we see a Miller B storm that has to make a sharp northern re-curvature after moving southeast to the coast, vigorously question just how far west it will get. I think those are the two main reasons why this storm was a comparative bust for most of Western Mass. Its hard to blow such a big call in front of thousands of people, but it is what it is. I did the best I could with what I had, and it wasnt good enough, and Ill try to do better next time. I appreciate so many of the wonderful sentiments about my work, and many say Im always right. Well, clearly Im not always right. But I admit when Im wrong. Today I was vastly wrong in my thinking (except for maybe towns like Brimfield, Holland, etc.). Light to occasionally moderate snow will continue for a while today, and then lighten up. Some additional accumulation is possible, especially the more south and east you go. Central Mass is the jackpot today, thats for sure. It was a Top 5 snowstorm for Worcester, exceeding 25 inches of snow so far. Ill update later, but were not seeing substantially more snow that we have right now in most of Western Mass, especially in a line from Wilbraham to Belchertown, and points west and north.
