Well, this might be a lengthy status update. My experience with live theater. Last weekend was the first time Ive ever been to the Steppenwolf Theater to see a play. For years, Ive seen this Chicago institution from the window of the brown line train. But it wasnt until my cousins invited me along to see This Is Our Youth, that I had caught the theater bug. I loved it! The theater had devices for the hearing impaired so listening to the actors was not as much a difficulty as usual (my hearing is not so good these days). The play starred Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, and Tavi Gevenson. It was a two act play that centered around a run away teen, his drug dealing bully friend, and the girl that said teen was infatuated with, all set in 1982 New York City. It was an unexpected comedy. Several things dawned on me while watching these talented actors channel their characters. We, the audience, are voyeurs. We look into the private lives of these flawed people like aliens. The play gave a little insight on the liberal Jewish culture of that time. Interesting people, would like to know some personally some day. The dynamics between the two friends reminded me of Pinky and the Brain. Running away from home after stealing 15 grand from your Dad and not having a plan afterwards is a bad idea. Being young and coming to grips with your impending mortality is the pits. When a girl makes love with a guy, it really means something to her. I can tick off people next to me by really getting into the play. Well Im sorry for being enthusiastic whoever you were... One thing that was hard to believe is people learning to like each other in a span of 20 minutes. But, its a play and things have to move along. I get that. I am hooked on the Steppenwolf and will be interested in seeing more productions. Profound moments do not happen often...
