Well, we did our first at-home IV antibiotic infusion this - TopicsExpress

Well, we did our first at-home IV antibiotic infusion this morning. The Home Healthcare nurse came to the house and took all the necessary information and then it was time to start the drip. I asked her up front if I could do it based on what the nurse had shown me as we were getting ready to leave the hospital yesterday. She said, absolutely! I got one of each of the items from the box they had sent us home with: The small bottle of dry antibiotics; a bag of saline in which to mix the dry material; two injectors of saline; a line of plastic tubing; and an injector of Heparin. As I started the process, Carla looked up at me from her recliner and asked if I was OK? I said, yes, and she smiled and at me and said, well, your hands sure are shaking. We did the IV administration for Dummies process (SASH) Saline-Antibiotics-Saline-Heparon. We set all the dials to the correct settings and watched as the fluid traveled down the tube and to Carlas port line along her collar bone. After it started, the nurse left and we were on our own. We did it in the hour they had told us it would take. I then flushed her port with one of the salines and then injected the Heparin block. Why, oh why, didnt I pay more attention to science in school??!! I think I got this--as long as I can get my hands to stop shaking.
