Well, we got our warm weather yesterday and lots of sunshine! Then the clouds rolled in and brought some serious lightning and rain with it! Lightning safety and outdoor activities go hand in hand! Sports officials must understand thunderstorms and lightning to ensure they make educated decisions on when to seek safety. The National Weather Service recommends officials of organized sports have a lightning safety plan they follow without exception. Lightning safety plans should specify that someone be designated to monitor the weather. Before an event, organizers should listen to the latest forecast to determine the likelihood of thunderstorms. Guidelines should include; when should activities be stopped, where should people go for safety, and when should activities be resumed. Be safe and have fun!
