Well, we just got a new fan for the heat sink today. $10 on eBay. With 89F ambient in the living room, it is averaging from 87C on core 0 to about 79C on core 3. Just rebooted the computer to see if that changes anything.. If it does it again, I will have to take the motherboard out again before bed. The problem is the power supply is directly above the motherboard in the chassis, and only 80mm of clearance exists. With the stock 120x12mm 47CFM fan, there is 22mm clearance with the heatsink installed for intake (top fan on the heatsink). With the new 120x25mm 93CFM fan, there is only 9mm intake clearance. I dont think I am getting 1.55 ft**3 a second into that 9mm gap. I was afraid of this, but had to try. The thicker fan is dual ball bearing, and has a high static pressure capability. Kayla and I want this thing to last, and I was not satisfied with low-mid 80s(C) while crunching on sustained SETI. This is a monthlong burn-in, which will have me over the million credit mark on SETI/BOINC (and over 6000 hours classic), since May 1999. We like the machine, and it is quite capable, and has me in the upper half percent of current project contributers, and inside the upper nine percent of alltime contributers (soon to be in the upper eight percent). Well, this has been running long enough to stabilize. Im going to put the Scythe 12mm thick fan back in. It seems hotter with the new fan. Too bad. The only other viable option is liquid cooling. Well have to piece it together...in the meantime, Ill put the stock fan back on the heatsink, that will cut 3-5C off of this. Oh to have another centimeter clearance, then this new fan would be kicking ass. Damnit. Might have an external pump/radiator by October or November, sooner if I could find a way to make some money. The way things are right now, Id have to do it a piece at a time.
