Well winter time gets me thinking so as my brain wondered through fishing ideas I decided to order a trolling motor mounted 360 and develop a way to utilize it for ice fishing. My brain tells me this should be awesome for ice fishing even though it isnt not designed or promoted as an ice fishing tool. The thing that I think makes it good for ice fishing is that the transducer does not need to be physically moving through the water. Some of the positives are that you can scan a large area from one hole and not have to drill a bunch of holes like you would with your traditional sonar or underwater cameras. You can drop waypoints over structure or fish and navigate to the waypoint and drill a hole and fish them. Seems to me to be a big time saver not to mention less work. Negative could be that it is more stuff to bring on the ice. Here is a picture of my idea. I used a short bucket to mount my Onix 10 and precision GPS antenna. I put two ice sonar batteries in bottom of bucket to power the Onix and the 360, so basically it is two pieces. One thing if you are looking at doing this is that you need to silicone a gap at where the shaft and the transducer come together. That gap will allow water in the shaft which can freeze and may break the transducer housing. I will also advise that this was not developed for ice fishing and is probably not designed for those conditions so I plan to be gentle to the transducer when out of the water. As you can probably tell the transducer will slide down to the end of the PVC and the tea will sit across the hole. I did this because the transducer has to be under the ice. Total length will be approximately five feet.
