Well, with the incoming snow that we are supposed to get tonight and tomorrow shattering my plans of seeing I, Frankenstein this weekend I bring you my review for The Lone Survivor, starring Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster, Emile Hursch, Eric Bana, and a cameo from Director Peter Berg. The Lone Survivor is based on a true story and tells the story of 4 soldiers dropped across enemy lines who are tasked with locating two Taliban leaders. An unexpected accident results in the four men taking on a whole army and trying to survive in a foreign land. Make no bones about it this film is closer to NC-17 than R in levels of violence and gore. The movie absolutely punishes the viewer and takes you into the middle of the battle with these men. The action sequences are brutal, bloody, punishing, and in your face. You really do feel for these men. They arent superhuman soldiers like John Rambo. They are real men with real families. They start out as fearless men of war but as everything starts to go wrong you see real fear set in with this men. The enemy in this film is an army that seems to be an unstoppable force of nature. It seemed that for every one enemy they killed two more took his place. There is a feeling as the first gunfight is taking place that there is a vice that is slowly closing on our heroes and is crushing. Until the very end of the film there are no subtitles used at all in this film so the viewer, along with the American soldiers, are kept in the absolute dark about what side some of these men are on and what the agenda of some of the Taliban warriors are. This serves as a way to keep the viewer at a complete unease and you dont know who you can trust. Also, there is no warning at all when the action starts. I am giving this film a ***1/2 out of *****. The reason being is the amount of gore in the film. I am a gore hound but even I was getting sick from it. Maybe that was the intention of the director? Everyone in the cast brings their A game and the picture is very well done. If you are into films such as Navy SEALS or Black Hawk Down then I strongly suggest this film. I have heard that the ending of the film and the ending of the book are significantly different. Well this is the end of part one of my reviews tonight stay tuned for part two coming shortly. And as usual if you agree or disagree with any of my reviews please feel free to comment below.
