Well worth a mention... a low budget Doco by NY blogger Advanced Style tells a poignant its never too late story I saw yesterday. On the surface its a film about a number of women bw age 66 and 95 for whom the everyday theatre of dressing up to meet the world is their guiding preoccupation BUT a deeper reading is that these women, all very individual in approach + from different kinds of backgrounds, remind how important a passion for life is. Getting older can be many things... and whether one likes the style or personality of these individuals you have to be knocked out by their chutzpah, their involvement in life! A beautiful spirit was 93 yr old artist Ilona who said life really started for her when she was about 80 and started teaching. She was a stand-out is so many ways. Such a great message for all women and girls. Style has little to do with money, think wearables from all over the planet, amazing traditions that inspire us now more than ever... its a kind of celebratory artistic expression. One woman called herself an artist of wearable textiles ... most of it from Op Shops....brilliant. Hilarious comments and moments of great wisdom from some! A New York Fashion Week runway with very young, pale, sad-looking skinny girls was juxtaposed with an official event for these older women to strut their stuff ... the absence of spirit and life in the look of the young was in such contrast... The message to be oneself, to express a sense of being at home with oneself is so missing in much of contemporary fashion and mores! So much of womens energy lost in conforming to ideas that control and mold and exclude and diminish! Becoming comfortable with ones being and ones place in the world is an invaluable thing to strive for. What a triumphant film! Obviously there are multiple ways to express individual character and vision... What works in Manhattan may not translate easily elsewhere... But the message should!
