Wellness tip for 01-29-14: “Ooh! Cool headband! Can I wear it?” “Hey! Give me my hat back!” TRUE: Lice are tiny bugs smaller than a sesame seed that live in people’s hair and scalp. TRUE: They do NOT cause diseases, but they are very contagious—meaning they spread easily from one person to another. TRUE: Lice love everybody! Getting lice does NOT mean you are dirty! TRUE: Lice make your head itch…but not everyone with lice will notice itchiness, so you can have lice without knowing it! TRUE: Louse eggs are called nits. These are tiny bumps attached to hair close to the scalp. They can be tan, black or brown. When they hatch, the egg “shell” stays attached and looks white. TRUE: Lice can be treated with special lotions and shampoos, so tell your parents or doctor right away if you think you might have ‘em! TRUE: Lice cannot fly…but they are very, very fast! To avoid lice, don’t put your heads together! NEVER share hats, headbands, barrettes, ponies, combs, brushes, sleeping bags or pillows! Sharing is usually a great idea — except when youre sharing lice! .…And there is nothing nice about lice!
