Welsh success at Olympia 2014 When Sam Roberts and Moelview Prince Consort were called forward to take the Blue Chip BSPS Heritage Championship at Olympia they were drawing to conclusion what can only be described as a phenomenal season. They began the year by taking the novice championship at Ponies Association UK Winter Final. This was followed in a matter of weeks with the first HOYS qualifier of the season which took them to second in the Birmingham final. Prince Consort gained his Olympia ticket at Royal Windsor where the stallion also went on to be champion – all this and still only a four year old. Bred at the Dolgellau-based Moelview Stud of Robert and Richard Jones, Prince Consort was bought as a foal by Denis and Julie Hounsham initially as a future sire for their Weydown Stud where he was shown and also bred. He was spotted through social media by Sam Roberts who broke him and now owns him in partnership with Helen Skirton. Sam Roberts of course is no stranger to top honours at Olympia having stood supreme with another section B, Bronheulog Harvey, in 2012. In third place was the ever- consistent Cadlanvalley Sandpiper ridden by Catherine Scott. Sandpiper was on his fourth consecutive visit to the London final, his best being in 2012 when he was reserve. Making his first appearance at Olympia was the next highest Welsh in fifth place, the Dutch- bred section A stallion Powys Sprite ridden by India Latter. He too has had a tremendous season including first at HOYS in October as well as first at Royal Welsh. In the final line up other Welsh made it through with Brynrodyn Darius eighth, Sarum Rembrandt ninth and in tenth the section D mare Taffechan Miss Moneypenny. Though unplaced, Menai Christopher was best of breed for section C. All in all another great day for the Welsh ponies and cobs. Congratulations go to all who showcased the breed in front of a capacity audience at Olympia. .
