Wenatchee Football Quote of the Day #3 Men, your homework is to complete the Strengths Discovery Package ($9.99) test at https://gallupstrengthscenter/Purchase and write your top 5 strengths on the paper provided. Along with your teammates and coaches, you will post your sheet in the weight room. Why? So you may begin the process of learning and valuing your unique strengths, and so your teammates may begin learning and valuing the talents you carry and bring to the collective whole. Something powerful begins to happen when we declare out loud our strengths and goals, and give others permission to hold us accountable to who we are. Your StrengthsFinder assessment will provide two reports. One report will be a quick review of your strengths. The other will be comprehensive. Please read the comprehensive report twice through. Then share this report with your parents, and any other people you give permission to help encourage your pursuit excellence and desire to be a man of character. Also, please email your strengths report to Blaine at blainecdavidson@gmail. Your quote and point of contemplation for the day: “When were able to put most of our energy into developing our natural talents, extraordinary room for growth exists. So, a revision to the You-can-be-anything-you-want-to-be maxim might be more accurate: You cannot be anything you want to be—but you can be a lot more of who you already are.” (Tom Rath, StrengthsFinder 2.0) Let’s be real…it’s a disservice to be told we can be anything we want to be. You’ve heard it before a thousands times. The ideal behind this maxim is an honorable thought, but it can diminish the process of learning and being real about who we are individually. Frankly, culture, parents, coaches, teachers and friends have subtly and sometimes not so subtly told us who we are. Which for some of us has negated the journey of finding what makes us come alive. Another problem with “You-can-be-anything-you-want-to-be” is the context. “Being” something is typically ascribed to either a vocation or an accomplishment rather than the strengths, talents, core values, character and identity each individual uniquely possesses. Not everybody can be, will be or desire to be a professional athlete, rocket scientist, teacher or ________ (insert whatever variable you want). But, if you are committed to discovering and learning who you are, who you long to be, and what strengths you have been naturally gifted with, you can increasingly become “a lot more of who you already are.” If we spend our lives trying to be good at everything, we will never be great at anything. The key to our development and performance enhancement is identifying and building on who we already are. Successful, confident people do not focus on their weaknesses, they maximize their strengths. Contemplate this equation and how it relates in your life: “Talent (a natural way of thinking, feeling, or behaving) × Investment (time spent practicing, developing your skills, and building your knowledge base) = Strength (the ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance)” (Tom Rath, StrengthsFinder 2.0)
