Wendy Makin A horse will be put to sleep today (Tuesday 30 July) following a savage assault by children who were at a meeting of the National Autograss Sport Association at Leewood Motor Club based at Castle Hill Farm, Ashley, Cheshire owned by Mr Robert Davies. The horse was attacked with a four foot fencing pole and stoned with rocks which resulted in his jaw being broken. This gentle horse has been fighting for his life since having his jaw wired at Liverpool University’s Leahurst Veterinary hospital. Every effort has been made to save the life of this poor horse who did not deserve to end his life in such a cruel and violent manner. Tim Clancy, Chairman of the Leewood Motor club agreed to cover the costs of the horses treatment on behalf of Leewood Motor Club but has now reneged on his word. The children were part of a group of members taking part in the Tony Jones Memorial Meeting held on Sunday 21 July 2013 and were left unsupervised by the parents for some time. There were no marshals and little supervision of children and young people on the day. Parents fulfilling their own ambitions with scant regard to the wellbeing of their unsupervised children is extremely sad. Maybe this beautiful, noble horse would still be alive if the children had been left glued to a violent game on their games consoles? What sort of world have we created where it’s acceptable to kill a horse with no apparent respect for life? It leads one to ponder - if the horse had not been so gentle and trusting and it was a child who had lost their fight for life what would we do then? Who and what would we blame?
