Wenger plans £6m raid for West Ham defender Reid in January window By David Kent Arsene Wenger is lining up a £6million January bid for West Ham defender Winston Reid. The Gunners are light on central defensive options with only unsettled captain Thomas Vermaelen offering competition to their first-choice pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and his scouting network have been keeping a close eye on the 25-year-old since the Hammers were promoted back to the top flight in 2012. Wenger switched his attention to Reid after being quoted £10million for Swansea and Wales captain Ashley Williams, 29, in the summer. Reids age and eligibility to play in the Champions League make him an attractive proposition for the Gunners, who hope to tempt West Ham with a £6m bid. The New Zealand defender moved to Upton Park from Danish side Midtjylland in 2010 following an impressive World Cup and after a quiet first season at the club he has established himself as one of the first names on Sam Allardyces team-sheet. Despite their lowly position in the table West Ham boast the fourth-best defence in the Premier League and Reid has earned rave reviews for his performances this season.
