Went down to bring up the Christmas tree stand for our beautiful fir tree and found it behind a bin of cherished mementos that had been absolutely destroyed by sewage somehow without our knowledge. We have been so blessed to get no water in our basement despite all the floods of recent years. We thought. This box was over a drain we didnt realize was there. Destroyed by water and mildew are not only the girls baptismal gowns and caps, sewn by my cousin, my honeymoon lingerie (Eva was a honeymoon baby so yeah, its a big deal), my wedding shoes (the dress was stolen years ago from a storage locker), all of the proofs of our wedding photos, Ilses footprints and handprints from the hospital, their receiving blankets, MY receiving blanket and baptismal gown, my masters thesis, award certificates for numerous essays I wrote in graduate school, all my diplomas...and pillowcases and aprons embroidered by my grandmother. I looked at my daughters, as perfect and intact as can be, and thought, you know what? Its not a big deal.
