Went into town yesterday with my 2-1/2 year little girl and saw - TopicsExpress

Went into town yesterday with my 2-1/2 year little girl and saw all the Halloween kids celebrating. A couple of young women were offering face painting for kids, and asked if Leah wanted a Halloween facepaint. Their own faces were painted, one with painted on face gashes with blood, and earlier saw a painted on cut throat on a young girl. Of coarse I didnt want my 2-1/2 year olds face painted, for fear that they might have wanted to paint my little girls face in a similar way. Obviously the two young women were gorgeous, well meaning kids and definitely not intending any harm, but celebrating Halloween would concern me in this town if it did present this type of imagery for kids as a thing which was paraded as just a bit of fun. The night before a facebook post was circulating of a 6 year old girl, found in Pakistan, with throat cut. This image burned into my soul. It was as if the whole universe had died with this little girl. I dont know what Halloween is and what it is meant to celebrate, it might be something legitimate, but it needs to find cultural forms that are more positive. I must say i find even the more benign form of its celebrating a little banal, mostly encouraging kids to eat sugar and lollies!
