Went through some old pictures the other day and some memories... On the 23rd we arrived home from 2 months on the ice and in the darkness. I remember the first year, with my new partner, who turned out to change character as the sun disappeared. He got depressed in the dark, so we didnt really speak for more than 14 days. It was good morning and good night, we might have a word on where we were going, but otherwise it was dead silent for 10 hours, cheering on the dogs... that was an experience. I didnt know at that time what was going, so figured I had done something wrong, but he never told me anything. We had a massive fight one night after he did something just dont do and the air was cleared. We arrived home, big eating orgy and drinking went on all night. ALl 6 sled teams were home so we had lots of catching up to do. Then we started the task of putting the kilos we had lost back on again. I dont drop weight easy, nor gain, but the first year I had dropped 5 kilos which I gained in 2 days! It was important to regain the weight you dropped, because the next journey would be at least 4 months. The Christmas tradition called for a big feats on the 24th and subsequently a massive Christmas Lunch, where 4-5 people had been cooking for 2 days straight. I think we had 46 different dishes and it all disappeared within days. Remember had had been living on oats with dark chocolate for breakfast, lunch was 1 square of Ritter Sport chocolate, dinner was rice with beef stroganof or similar - and late night we would have rye bread with cod liver or pate. Every.Single.Day. Pictures of how dark is was on a good (light) day around early December at lunch time and one end of the Christmas lunch table. Bizarre how you can miss that!
