Went to 2 evacuation centers today and although things are and - TopicsExpress

Went to 2 evacuation centers today and although things are and will never be the same for them, I didnt see a single somber face. Some families are leaving for other towns, some are still wanting to return to Samar and Leyte, some wish to just remain in Cebu with 4 individuals already actively looking for a job. The kids get music therapy, play therapy, and group-sponsored games and activities all throughout the day. The dining calendar is booked through mid-December by individuals and restaurants committed to provide them breakfast, lunch and dinner. Volunteers are there to attend to their needs, while DSWD personnel screen who goes in, stating they are concerned about maintaining some semblance of privacy for these people and has a running list of things needed that gets updated daily. Every single person is accounted for. Boxes are piled to the side, clearly labeled and each departing family gets a share of whatever items are in those, with their travel fare already sponsored by kind hearted individuals. Although Im pretty sure these families appreciate the kindness shown towards them, Im doubly sure these volunteers and personnel get twice the satisfaction. Its like sending off our kids on the first day of school - we dont know how theyll fare out there, but its something that needs to be done so they can stand on their own. This experience brought out the good and the bad, but in this case, its the bayanihan spirit through and through.
