Went to West Lawn Cemetary in Racine today to put flowers on my dads grave and to make sure there was a flag on his grave. Dad was a WWII vet who served in the Marine Corps and was on Iwo Jima when the American flag went up on Mt. Suribachi. Upon entering the cemetary, Jim and I noticed there were no flags on the graves, except for the flags loved ones had left. My worse fears came real - no flag on my dads grave. I raised holy hell in the cemetary office and was told no flags because of the weather! WHAT????? The weather - are you kidding. Needless to say, I was livid. Jim came to my rescue and threatened to contact the media. That fell on deaf ears...until Jim made the call to Channel 12 news in Milwaukee. Channel 12 contacted the cemetary and they promised to have flags staked by sun rise tomorrow morning. You know I will be there to make sure. My only regret is that Channel 12 didnt interview me. I was hoping for that because there are hundreds of other loved ones that didnt know what the cemetary was NOT doing. We saw an elderly lady pounding a flag into the ground next to the gravestone of her loved one. Disgusting and unacceptable. It just better not ever happen again.
