Went to a discussion on art, culture and class at the Third Place Gallery in Minneapolis on Saturday evening. On the previous 3 days I had viewed Edward Hoppers exhibit at the Walker on Thursday, listened to David Muras poetry at the Loft on Friday, participated in a writing group in a Mexican restaurant Saturday morning, attended a members only opening at the Russian Museum of Art Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening participated in the discussion on art, culture and class. As I listened to the discussion I became aware of how deeply conflicted I am when it comes to art, class and culture. My roots are blue collar, my education level is upper middle class and how I live is mid-middle class. My weekend journey through the arts took me from high traditional and contemporary art, to community art and to working class art. Now I have some sorting out to do.
