Went to get Teina a new school bag for her birthday to replace her tattered one. Had a lovely exchange with the young woman shop assistant. She managed to convince me to buy some art and activity books they also had on special. I picked up the blue one with dolphins and dinosaurs and she said yep thats the boy one and the girl one is here too and I was pointed to the pink ones with flowers and princesses on it. I said those are cool but my daughter also likes dolphins. She was protesting for them a couple months ago. Oh cool she said. Maybe you could get her two books? I said I will get the pink one because my son really likes pink. He wears his big sisters pink stiletto high heels all the time. She looked at me surprised for a second. Then she said there is a green one here for boys AND girls if you like? Then she paused - then looked at me and said actually theyre all for boys or girls really. I smiled at her. She was friendly and professional and lovely and our conversation had been warm and genuine from the start. And by the end of our korero she had just told me that all toys are for all children :)
