Went to see Jarmuschs, Only Lovers Left Alive. Thought it was - TopicsExpress

Went to see Jarmuschs, Only Lovers Left Alive. Thought it was great. Hes still representing a side of 80s Independent film shared by Wim Wenders and others that allows for extreme stylization, historicism and a complete lack of shame concerning the creation of beauty. We got in the car after the movie and Laurie Andersons Oh Superman, was playing on WNYC. Made me think about the 80s yet again. What a shamelessly beautiful piece of art that song is. Yes its arch, but the bursts of electric harmony are hypnotic and layered and reveal a restrained passion for the emotive effect of music. The 80s were, for me, despite all the postmodern lack of affect, an earnest time. The novels of Kathy Acker are another example. Ive been re reading them. The 80s felt earnest to me then or maybe I just was, or maybe still am; but I like the range of beauty that was possible then.
